The human rights situation in Ethiopia remains a complex and critical issue, characterized by a mix of formal institutional reforms and significant, ongoing violations tied to regional conflicts and political instability.
Key Human Rights Issues (2024–2026)
Reports from international and domestic monitors highlight several persistent concerns:
- Conflict-Related Abuses: Fighting between government forces and regional militias (notably in Amhara, Oromia, and post-conflict Tigray) has led to extrajudicial killings, mass displacement, and the destruction of civilian infrastructure like hospitals.
- Arbitrary Detention: Authorities frequently use state-of-emergency laws to arrest journalists, opposition politicians, and activists without due process.
- Freedom of Expression: There is a documented erosion of civic space, including internet shutdowns in conflict zones and intimidation of human rights defenders.
- Sexual and Gender-Based Violence: Conflict-related sexual violence remains a severe issue, with reports of rape used as a method of warfare.
- Impunity: Meaningful accountability for past and present abuses is often described as lacking, with many government investigations seen as insufficient or non-transparent.
