The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) was established in 1970 through the efforts of the Norwegian and Swedish Save the Children organizations, with support from the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia. The Institute is named after the Norwegian physician, Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, who was the first to identify the leprosy bacillus (Mycobacterium leprae).
AHRI was reorganized by the decree of the Council of Minister’s Regulation No. 376/2016 to focus on biomedical research, clinical trials, and research capacity building under the Federal Ministry of Health. Over its 50 years of operation, AHRI has gained recognition for its role as a hub for skill and technology transfer, fostering partnerships that align with research agendas aimed at making a direct impact on the development and transformation of populations in Ethiopia and beyond.
