About African Parks

African Parks is a non-profit conservation organization that manages national parks and protected areas across Africa in partnership with governments and local communities. The organization currently manages 23 parks in 13 countries, covering more than 20 million hectares. In Ethiopia, African Parks manages Gambella National Park, home to iconic species such as Nile lechwe, elephants, lions, and the shoebill stork, and part of Africa’s largest mammal migration—the white-eared kob.

Job Summary

The Community Development Manager will oversee all community engagement and development activities around Gambella National Park. Working closely with the Park Manager, this role focuses on strengthening relationships with local communities, promoting conservation awareness, and implementing the 3E+ Community Engagement Strategy to support sustainable livelihoods and wildlife protection.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise the Community and Sustainable Development Department.

  • Develop and implement community conservation and livelihood initiatives.

  • Coordinate with partners and stakeholders to identify funding opportunities.

  • Oversee community-based projects such as WASH, education, and healthcare.

  • Support land-use planning and ensure community participation in park programs.

  • Build positive relationships with local authorities and community leaders.

  • Monitor progress, prepare reports, and manage budgets effectively.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Master’s degree in Social Work, Public Administration, Community Development, or related field.

  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience, including 5 years in a senior management role.

  • Experience working in protected area management or remote rural settings preferred.

  • Strong leadership, coordination, and communication skills.

  • Excellent command of English; Amharic or local language skills are an advantage.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

  • Willingness to live and work in remote field conditions.
