UN Conference on Trade and Development is an intergovernmental organization within the United Nations Secretariat that promotes the interests of developing countries in the governance of international trade, financial flows and technology transfer.
We support developing countries to access the benefits of a globalized economy more fairly and effectively. And we help equip them to deal with the potential drawbacks of greater economic integration. To do this, we provide analysis, facilitate consensus-building, and offer technical assistance. This helps them to use trade, investment, finance, and technology as vehicles for inclusive and sustainable development.
Position: Economic Affairs Intern
Requirements:
- Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate degree program (Master’s, Ph.D., or equivalent); or
- Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a bachelor’s degree program (or equivalent).
- Hold or be pursuing a university degree in Economics.
- No prior professional work experience is required.
- Have a field of study closely related to the internship.
- Be proficient in standard computer applications, particularly Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Microsoft Teams.
- Demonstrate a strong interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to the principles of the UN Charter.
- Demonstrate the ability to work effectively with people from diverse cultural backgrounds and respect differing opinions and perspectives.
- Be able to conduct desktop research and draft concept notes, research papers, and project or research proposals (desirable).
- Meet at least one of the UN Internship Programme eligibility criteria and provide proof of enrollment or graduation (an official certificate will be required at a later stage).
The position is in the United Nations Conference for Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The Internship Programme is unpaid and full-time, i.e., an intern is expected to work five days per week (40 hours).
The internship is offered on in-person or remote basis. The position is located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in the Regional Office for Africa (ROA) of the Division for Africa, Least Developed Countries and Special Programmes (ALDC). The internship will tentatively start on 17 August 2026 for an initial period of three months.
