About the Job
Hararghe Health Research (HHR) is a collaborative effort between Haramaya University and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in the performance of maternal and child health studies to support programs and policy. Current research projects include Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance Network (CHAMPS), Maternal Immunization (MI), Invasive Bacterial Disease (IBD), pneumococcal and meningococcal surveillance studies, and EChiLiBRiST – clinical trial.
The post holder will play a crucial role in the EChiLiBRiST clinical trial, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial evaluating L-Citrulline oral supplementation to improve outcomes in admitted febrile pediatric patients at high risk of adverse outcomes.
The successful candidate will be responsible for collecting information on the clinical management of patients, monitoring study participants, and ensuring adherence to the study protocol, Good Clinical Practice guidelines, and ethical considerations.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Screen children for eligibility based on defined criteria.
- Initiate and oversee informed consent procedures with parents/legal guardians, ensuring clear understanding of study participation.
- Enroll eligible participants into the study.
- Conduct thorough initial and follow-up clinical evaluations of admitted patients.
- Monitor participants for adverse outcomes and readmission.
- Assess and manage adverse events and serious adverse events, reporting them as required by the protocol.
- Ensure appropriate standard of care is provided to all participants.
- Oversee the administration of assigned study supplements to randomized participants.
- Monitor tolerability and outcomes.
- Oversee the collection of various biological samples at specified timepoints for laboratory assessments.
- Accurately record all clinical information and study data in Case Report Forms.
- Ensure data confidentiality and proper handling of patient information.
- Ensure participants and caregivers adhere to study procedures and follow-up schedules while in the hospital.
Required Qualification and Experience
Education: Medical Doctor (MD).
Experience: Minimum experience required is 0 years. Experience in general practice, particularly with pediatric patients, clinical research, or clinical trials is an advantage.
Certification: Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certification and a medical license are mandatory.
Skills:
- Strong clinical assessment and diagnostic skills in pediatrics.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact sensitively with patients and their families.
- Attention to detail for accurate data collection and documentation.
- Ability to work effectively within a research team.
- Proficiency in English and local languages relevant to the study sites, such as Afan Oromo and Amharic.
Knowledge: Familiarity with clinical trial processes and ethical guidelines in research.
The position will primarily be based at Haramaya Hospital and Hiwot Fana Hospital in Haramaya and Harar, Ethiopia. The role involves working in the Emergency Pediatric Outpatient Department (EPOPD) and/or pediatric wards.
