The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) was established in 1970 through the efforts of the Norwegian and Swedish Save the Children organizations, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia. The Institute is named after the Norwegian physician, Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, who was the first to identify the leprosy bacillus (Mycobacterium leprae).

AHRI underwent reorganization following the Council of Minister’s Regulation No. 376/2016, positioning itself as a center for biomedical research, clinical trials, and research capacity building under the Federal Ministry of Health. Throughout its 50 years of operation, AHRI has gained recognition for its role as a hub for skill and technology transfer, fostering partnerships that align with research agendas aimed at making a direct impact on the development and transformation of populations in Ethiopia and beyond.

Position 1: Junior Researcher (GIS & Remote Sensing)

Job Requirements

  • BSc/BA in GIS and Remote sensing, Geomatics, Chartography, or a related field with no experience: Minimum CGPA of 3.00 for male and 2.75 for female applicants

Terms of employment: One-year contract period on a full-time employment basis with possibility of extension

Position 2: Junior Researcher (AI/ML Engineer)

Qualifications and Proficiency:

  • BSc/MSc degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, or Artificial Intelligence (AI) from a recognized university with zero (0) years of work experience; Minimum CGPA of 3.00 for male and 2.75 for female applicants
  • Programming & AI Basics: Demonstrable foundational knowledge in relevant programming languages (such as Python or R) and familiarity with common data science/ML frameworks (e.g., NumPy, Pandas, scikit-learn, PyTorch, or TensorFlow).
  • Operating System: Willingness to learn and basic ability to navigate and work in a Linux/Unix command-line environment (training will be provided for advanced HPC/Linux workflows).
  • Interest: A strong, proven motivation to pursue a career in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and biomedical data research.

Salary: As per the scale of the institution

Duty station: Addis Ababa

Position 3: Assistant Researcher I – Statistics and Data Science

Required Education and Qualifications

  • BSc in Statistics, Data Science with strong quantitative training, or another closely related field. At least two years of relevant work experience in statistical analysis, data science, health research, surveillance, research data management and a comparable quantitative role.
  • Minimum CGPA of 3.00 for male and 2.75 for female applicants.

Position 4: Researcher II (Laboratory Manager)

Educational Qualifications

  • Required: PhD. with Medical Biochemistry, in Medical Laboratory Science, Biomedical Sciences, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, or a closely related field with at least 2 years of experience.
  • Publication points =>6

Position 5: Assistant Researchers I (Study Nurses)

Required Qualification

  • BSc degree in Nursing with active license.
  • Minimum CGPA of 3.00 for male and 2.75 for female applicants.
  • 2 years of clinical experience
  • Clinical research or trial experience is preferred
  • Experience in neonatal/pediatric care is preferred.
  • Skills in anthropometric measurements and biological sample collection.
  • Good interpersonal and counselling skills.
  • Ability to conduct field/home visits in community settings.

House Allowance: 6,500.00 ETB

Position 6: Assistant Researcher I (Study Laboratory Technologist)

Education and Experience:

  • BSc Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology
  • Minimum CGPA of 3.00 for male and 2.75 for female applicants.
  • 2 years of laboratorywork experience.
  • Health research or clinical experience is preferred.

Specialized Skills:

  • Experience with aerobic bacterial culture using conventional and automated methods is a plus.
  • Competence in culture media preparation, maintenance, and purification of bacterial stocks is a plus
  • Familiarity with cell culture techniques and basic immunological and molecular assays (PCR, qPCR), a plus.
  • Skill in identifying and characterizing bacterial species.
  • Knowledge of biosafety, aseptic technique, and quality assurance procedures.

Salary: 35,148.00 ETB
House Allowance: 6,500.00 ETB

Position 7: Junior Researcher (Study Pharmacists)

Required Qualification

  • B.Pharm degree with an active license to practice.
  • Minimum CGPA of 3.00 for male and 2.75 for female applicants.
  • 0 years of experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of GCP, pharmacy laws, and ethical guidelines related to clinical trials is preferable.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and strong organisational skills for accurate record-keeping.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary research team.

Salary: 27,464.00 ETB

House allowance: 5,000.00 ETB
